PHOTOGRAPHY: OVERLOOK: CIVIL WAR: CIVIL WAR
The Civil War is the defining moment in United States history: It was the culmination of the all-encompassing crisis of slavery. It was the event that reset the moral compass of American society institutionally, if not in practice. And it is a war with a legacy that is felt on a daily basis.
During the last three years, I have been visiting Civil War related locations as part of the broader landscape project, Overlook. What began as a few convenient trips to Gettysburg has unexpectedly returned me to my days as an undergraduate history major. Over time, as I have visited and revisited these beautiful and haunted battlefields, the work has become a meditation on war and sacrifice, as well as the particular mythology of the Civil War, and the meaning of 'hallowed ground'.
Perhaps most importantly, making these pictures has challenged me to reflect on slavery’s continuing impact on contemporary society and culture.
Please see OVERLOOK info page for more background on this project.
