PHOTOGRAPHY: OVERLOOK
The Overlook pictures began years ago as a record of places I have visited on my many road trips. Whenever I would come across a designated scenic overlook or vista, I would stop and make a picture. I was and am interested in the politics of these deliberately constructed views, but mostly I wanted to remember what it felt like to be in specific locations at a particular moment in my life.
Over time I began to photograph a broader range of places, both officially marked and personally memorable. The work remains an ongoing visual diary, but has also become a way for me to consider questions of memory – both personal and collective – as well as the ways we assign meaning to place.
